Abstract The South African component of the international South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation project (SAMOC-SA) aims to characterise the time-mean and time-varying components of the SAMOC in the South Atlantic Ocean and monitor the variability of the main Southern Ocean frontal systems associated with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), south of Africa. Here we present processed magnitude and direction of daily currents in the upper part of the water column (43.49 - 291.49m) from an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) located at a depth of 309m at M4 (34.2942°S; 17.8803°E) along the South Atlantic MOC Basin-wide Array (SAMBA) transect in the Cape Basin region of the South Atlantic Ocean, between 10 July 2014 and 09 December 2014.
Methods A subsurface-mounted, upward-looking, 150 kHz RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) was configured with a bin size of 8m and a blanking distance of 3.52m, and deployed at a depth of 309m at location M4 (34.2942°S; 17.8803°E), along the South Atlantic MOC Basin-scale Array (SAMBA) transect in the Cape Basin region of the South Atlantic Ocean. The instrument measured hourly magnitude and direction in the upper part of the water column (43.49 - 291.49m) between 10 July 2014 and 09 December 2014. These hourly values were corrected for magnetic declination, and then averaged to daily means for each depth bin. Only hourly values which showed ≥ 75% good beam data were used, and daily values were only generated for days on which there were 75% or more hourly readings. The data were then formatted in a .txt file with data values separated by commas.
